Basically, it is a <strong>non-covering<\/strong>. Leaves the <strong>visible grain<\/strong>.  <br>A mordant is a varnish but <strong>not an enamel<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/vernice-per-legno-risposte-alle-principali-domande-della-rete\/#Che-differenza-ce-tra-smalto-e-vernice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enamels being opaque paints<\/a>); It can be used on all types of wood &ndash; furniture, accessories, fixtures, objects;<\/p>\n<p>The mordant can be found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>in grains or powder<\/strong> form, to be diluted in a <strong>water<\/strong>-, <strong>alcohol<\/strong>&ndash; or <strong>oil<\/strong>-based solution;<\/li>\n<li>as a <strong>ready-made product<\/strong>, again on a water, special skills. The important thing is to organise yourself to buy the material needed in the correct quantity, so that you do not risk stopping halfway through the job because you do not have enough product. So it is a good idea to get help from your dealer to find out how much stain you need for the surface to be treated; <br>It can be purchased in specialised shops in the <strong>ready-to-use<\/strong>, then dissolved in oil (slower drying, more uniform result) or alcohol (faster drying, colour will be lighter). Instead, for the more experienced, the mordant can be found in <strong>granules or powder<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>If the <a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soluzione_(chimica)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water-based solutions<\/a> are suitable for most jobs, <strong>for the treatment of very thin surfaces, an alcohol-based stain is preferable<\/strong>. Water, in fact, would risk causing the wood to swell and expand;<\/p>\n<p>Before applying the mordant, a distinction must be made between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>rough<\/strong> or natural wood: you can use stain where you have removed dust and any splinters;<\/li>\n<li><strong>varnished wood<\/strong>: in this case it is essential to sand down to remove all varnish residues. Otherwise the action of the stain would be ineffective or null; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once the wood is clean and ready to be treated, simply use a <strong>brush<\/strong> (medium or small) or a sponge, pad or cotton cloth. The roller is best avoided as it is not suitable for this type of work; <\/p>\n<p>To get the job done right:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>check the colour of the mordant on a corner<\/strong> of the artefact to make sure it is the shade you want, then proceed with application;<\/li>\n<li><strong>avoid product build-up<\/strong>. Spread the stain evenly; <\/li>\n<li>with a cotton cloth <strong>remove excess product<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>we recommend <strong>at least two coats<\/strong> of product to be applied one after the other, waiting for it to dry in between;<\/li>\n<li><strong>the more coats<\/strong> of stain you apply, the darker the wood essence will be.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"quando-serve\" class=\"anchor\">When needed<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-53684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mordente-per-legno_6.jpg\" alt=\"A female hand is treating the frame of an antique wooden chair she is restoring with a mordant-soaked pad;\" width=\"960\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mordente-per-legno_6.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mordente-per-legno_6-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mordente-per-legno_6-768x500.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stain is used when you want to give new life to a wooden element;<br>It is usually used to <strong>emphasise<\/strong> the natural surface of the wood, or to <strong>darken<\/strong> it, or to <strong>change the colour<\/strong> and make the surface more <strong>uniform<\/strong>;<br>It should be specified that the mordant <strong>not a protector<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Stain is widely used in the <strong>restoration of antique furniture<\/strong>, but also to give colour to new unfinished wooden elements;<br>Generally, the use of stain is preferred for <strong>interior wood<\/strong>. For exteriors, however, we opt for impregnation, which is water-repellent and protects the wood from UV rays; <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cosa-fare-dopo-il-mordente\" class=\"anchor\">What to do after the bite<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-53659\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mordente-per-legno_5.jpg\" alt=\"A woman is treating a wooden window frame outside an all-wooden house with impregnant;\" width=\"960\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mordente-per-legno_5.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mordente-per-legno_5-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mordente-per-legno_5-768x500.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After the stain is perfectly dry, you can proceed with the finish, using, as desired:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a <strong>transparent matt varnish<\/strong>, such as Rio Verde&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/vernice-per-legno-prodotti\/finitura-opaca-rp4060\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RP4060 matt finish<\/a>; It is a product based on acrylic-polyurethane resins with a very low solvent content. Moreover, it does not contain any substances that are problematic for the health of the user or the environment; <\/li>\n<li>a <strong>transparent gloss varnish<\/strong>. In this case, we recommend Rio Verde&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/vernice-per-legno-prodotti\/finitura-lucida-rp4160\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RP4160 gloss finish<\/a>, which has the same characteristics as the above-mentioned matt varnish; <\/li>\n<li>an <strong>oil<\/strong>, such as the Rio Verde <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/vernice-per-legno-prodotti\/olio-decorativo-2-in-1-ro30xx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decorative oil<\/a>, available in two versions: natural and white; It is an oil that protects wood by giving it a high degree of water repellency and a silky feel;<\/li>\n<li>of <strong>wax<\/strong> or <strong>shellac treatments<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"alternativa-al-mordente\" class=\"anchor\">Alternative to mordant<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"I tre impregnanti per legno della linea Rio Verde\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kpMfNHg0nnU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If, as we have said, the stain is mainly used for interior wood products, there is nothing to prevent the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/impregnante-per-legno\/\">impregnating<\/a><\/strong>, which not only colours but also gives protection. The product penetrates deep into the wood, without forming a surface film. The function is to make the material <strong>hydrophobic<\/strong> and <strong>preserve it from mould and insects<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/vernice-per-legno-prodotti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rio Verde range<\/strong><\/a> there are impregnating agents suitable for every need, designed for window and door frames, garden furniture, cladding, balconies, fences, pergolas, beams..;<br>There are two categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>water-based<\/strong> impregnating agents:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/vernice-per-legno-prodotti\/impregnante-classico-all-acqua-rmxx10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>classic<\/strong><\/a>, decorates and protects wood from weathering attack;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/vernice-per-legno-prodotti\/impregnante-ceroso-all-acqua-rc1x30\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>waxy<\/strong><\/a>, which imparts water repellency while preserving the natural matt appearance of wood;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vernicirioverde.it\/vernice-per-legno-prodotti\/impregnante-gel-all-acqua-rgxx80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>gel<\/strong><\/a>, which protects, does not drip and helps to even out the aesthetic result;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>solvent-based<\/strong> impregnating agents (not recommended for interiors, however):\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"noopener\"><strong>waxy<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-53674\"
